You’re in your bathroom, and you’re looking all around. You see all sorts of blah. Especially if you’ve just moved in and that last people who lived there were from the 1980s. You know what I mean? Let’s get to work, let’s get it done gorgeously with Cube&Dot. It’s a a matching ceramic, washbasin and bathroom cabinets. One giant system of excellent circles and squares and angle lines.

You’ve got the washbasin and some cabinets. You buy those standard (although they’re amazing and totally NOT standard in any way other than the most basic meaning of standard). Then you’ve got the modular ceramic tile system for the walls. There’s the sharp angles of the cubes you might maybe possibly have sort of seen before, (but not this fabulous before of course). Then there’s the dots. They’ll make your wall look like one gigantic news comic page. Fantastic!

The most amazing thing I can comment on since I can get my hands on it instantly is this, Cube&Dot online interactive tool where you can design your own wall with the Cube&Dot ceramic mosaic tile collection.

Cubes or dots!

X-Runner By Noa Lerner Of Morph Design

X-Runner By Noa Lerner Of Morph Design

So you’ve got a situation where you’ve got little or no running water. You’ve got a no-toilet sort of place, and that place is also in a community that’s either poor or completely broke. What do you do? You look for a way to get rid that waste, but not only that, a way to turn that waste into energy. What Noa Lerner’s got here is a way to do that, by rolling a barrel full of poop down the road, trading it in for boombox time!

First, watch the video in this post to see what I mean by boombox time. It’s super awesome, made with stop-motion, showing the simple process the person whose pooped needs to go through in order to trade their toilet waste into energy. Very simple, very well made, very easy to understand.

A bit more in detail: Each of these toilet barrels is sealed and nano-coated in a way that allows them to be used for a week at a time without emptying or cleaning. Once it’s time to empty, the barrel is brought by an individual or a multi-barrel servce to the local Biogas Plant. Once there, waste is traded for energy in the form of cooking gas, warm water for showers, or electricity. All of these forms of energy are generated by processing the human waste at the Biogas Plant.

You know what this reminds me of? The science fiction post-apocalyptic movie “Mad Max : Beyond Thunderdome”, a movie which features a town run on methane, a gas that comes from pig waste. It’s made to seem absurd but totally possible in that movie. Welcome to the future of energy!

This project is being specifically developed for the Indian Subcontinent, where basic amenities like a toilet in a house are missing…even in urban, developed areas.

Roly Poly Iron By Sangyong Park Jungmin Park amp Sunwoo Hwang

Roly Poly Iron By Sangyong Park Jungmin Park amp Sunwoo Hwang

Ive been watching BBCs The Genius of Design and it has totally re-educated my perspective of the Industrial Design profession. The genius of design is in offering solutions to a problem in such a way that they dont compromise on our routine habits. The other aspect of designing that I understood was that its not wrong for designers to try and improvise an existing solution, with their own perceptions. Usually I disregard a design submission that is very similar to a published post, but this time around I want to bring out the two and spark a debate on the design challenge.

Problem:

The clothes iron is a fantastic invention and the technique dates back to the ancient Chinese people using pans filled with hot coals to iron out clothes. With electricity and modernization we moved on to regular and steam irons. However one situation remained constant with the advent of new technologies burning clothes due to carelessness.

Solution:

One solution that we recently saw was the Roly Poly Iron designed by Wonkook Lee. It worked on the rocking principle where weights in the handle pulled back the iron into a standing position, when not in use. A simple enough idea that was worth exploring!

Ironically, I have stumbled upon another similar solution and whats really weird is that this iron too is called the Roly Poly. Like I said we dont usually publish repetitive ideas, but what makes the second version different from Wonkooks is derived from my first statement: offering solutions that dont compromise on our daily habits. Roly Poly II has a form that we are very familiar with, it is intuitive and basic. It solves the problem of being careless while ironing by rolling back to the upright position, but in a very logical way.

Would you call Part II a genius of design or are we mature enough to break the mold of conventional norms and adopt designs that are form beyond function?

Combining Hangers And Basket By Jhih-Jie Liou amp Wei-Lun Wang

Combining Hangers And Basket By Jhih-Jie Liou amp Wei-Lun Wang

If you’re really short on closet space, maybe this will help. Hangers in a Basket is just what the name implies. The hangers work like any other but when clothes get dirty, pop them onto the handle. The form a nifty little cage around dirty clothes. What happens when you’re halfway thru your clothes? No idea but it looks like it could triple as a line dryer too. Hmm…
