Born in a house where tea-drinkers thrived, I was the outcast and was treated as odd moody mad-eye for loving coffee! Just to jibe everyone, I would go out and buy myself the most exclusive coffee mug in town and would savor my treat in it. This would naturally irk my mom, but me being meI soon had a collection of quirky and snazzy mugs! Did you know that the YD Store too had some awesome coffee mugs in their collection? The Dervish Coffee Cup takes inspiration from the Sufi Saints and their attire. Flowing robes that spin around as they twirl to their enchanting music! This essence is captured perfectly in the coffee-cup set of two. The double-walled porcelain cup gives a safe grip, making the cup handle an unnecessary attachment. Thanks to the curvilinear form of the plate, it is very easy to hold and carry. Once together, the two parts transform into a single, fluent form, preventing any risk of spilling. Id love to have a set for myself!

Open It! is quite a clever package design and I hope someone like the exemplified Nescafe takes cue. The idea is for cold coffee mix but I think we can use it for hot cappuccino mixes as well. You simply open up the top end of the coffee mixture pouch, pour the contents into water and use the same pouch as a straw for stirring & sipping the drink! Simple and totally worth commercializing!

Go go go and drink drink drink.

I’m in love with this electric kettle serving set called Friend’s Coffee. The designer wanted to keep it simple and tame the design aesthetics of traditional hot drink sets. The result is a monolithic design; a kettle and 4 serving mugs all set on a large load tray. The tray can be unplugged at anytime to be properly served from. Beautiful design.

Did you know that Starbuck’s Coffee sells on average 30 MILLION cups of coffee a day? That’s almost 11 BILLION cups of coffee a year! As impressive as that statistic may be, the flip side of their fortune building is the tons and tons of wasted paper and plastic involved with every single caffeine fix. Designer Christopher Panopoulos does not have a solution for all that waste, but he does want the ubiquitous coffee cup to serve double duty and be slightly more sustainable. How about a Willy Wonka inspired edible lid? Or a lid that flips into an ashtray? I’m not sure what his intention is with these other two designs but regardless, he got us here at Yanko Design thinking… how would you repurpose a cup of coffee?

If I were to pick out 5 quirky ways to brew my java, Id pick the Cemented Joy, Coffee Stick, Finger Cup, Wooden Passion and the Racepresso! The last one being a new addition needs special mention. Schumis pet Ferrari branding and Nespresso cross breading is evident in this helmet-styled coffee machine. But what gives me the kicks, is that it will fit perfectly into retro-styled interiorsfrom the 70s-80s era where it was all about having loud, faux-branded unique collectables! So very Kitsch!

Concrete, ideal for building homes and roads but is it good enuf for a coffee machine? Tough question to answer, but apparently we can take Shmuel Linskis help on this coz hes designed one. The rugged appeal and the delectable cracks in its form; Espresso Solo looks smoking hot in this cemented avatar! Shmuel has kept the project simple, the machine makes only espresso: short and long. A chamber for the beans and an outlet for water are all that it features. No fuss, just solid love for caffeine and irresistible forms!
