The Radiance Resort - Nuclear Health Spa By Rachel Harding

Could Embracing the Possible Health Benefits of Toxicity Persuade Society to Accept Nuclear Power? Radiance Resort is a work of future fiction, it investigates a society obsessed with youth and medical miracle cures. Mammals living in the Chernobyl exclusion zone receive 8 to 15 msvs of radiation every day. When these mammals were analysed, it was found that they were less likely to develop cancer, suggesting that small amounts of radiation might be good for us.

It’s become an oasis of plants and animals. Now, many locals are sneaking in to eat the delicious radioactive fruits and mushrooms that have flourished in the absence of human inhabitation.

Many alternative medicines operate on the principle of hormesis, the idea that poisons have the opposite effect in small doses. In the 1920s, products containing radioactive matter became very popular. Radithor a kind of uranium water marketed as a cure for the living dead sold particularly well.

At the Radiance Resort and health club, lead-oxide textile shielding creates a varied landscape of gamma radiation. A hierarchy of treatments are offered, and radiation level is indicative of exclusivity. Guests can bathe on an incinerator ash beach, indulge in some uranium enriched super-food, or enjoy a radioactive seaweed wrap. You know what they say. If it doesn’t kill you, it only makes you stronger. Check out some of the spa-licious treatments available.

Gamma Wave Pool
A patient bathes in the radioactive water from the reactor.

Exterior Perspective
Lead clad arms wrap around a central nuclear reactor at different angles to inhabit different zones of radiation.

Radiation Needles
Filigree lead needles allow for the precise control of radiation.

Nuclear Massage
Patients are massaged with hazmat gloves.

Plan
Treatment rooms wrap around the central nuclear reactor at different angles to create varied levels of radiation
exposure.

The Radiance Resort is a 2011 iF concept design winning entry!

Traccia Concept Phone By Andrea Ponti

Traccia Concept Phone By Andrea Ponti

The Traccia is a phone concept modeled on how we use a writing instrument, specifically a pen. The intuitive way we write on a sheet is translated to commands for the phone thanks to the embedded optical sensor located at the end of the stick. Basically whatever you write gets translated to a command or function via the installed software. This means your invisible writing can be converted to SMS or an email, just like that!

The navigation design is basic with just three simple keys to one end. The built in polycarbonate gives the phone a natural feel and makes the touchscreen even more alluring. And of course no phone is complete without a camera, so the Traccia positions its camera at the center of the arc, right under the display.

All said I done, I just have to wonder if the grip of this phone is as comfortable as the rest. An arc on a stick doesnt look ideal, but you never know till you dont try it.

Floating Smartphone By In-oh Yoo And Sun-woong Oh For Metatrend Institute

Floating Smartphone By In-oh Yoo And Sun-woong Oh For Metatrend Institute

Oh so you’re not satisfied with phones that connect at speeds almost as fast as you can click and hundreds of new applications that do everything under the sun each day? Well here’s something new for you then! It’s a concept design done by two industrious folks In-oh Yoo and Sun-woong Oh who want nothing more than to bring you a phone that spins in mid-air. This phone works in tangent with its charging cradle, its cradle, the phone and magnets creating a space where the phone spins while charging, creating a unique aesthetic experience.

First, the phone itself has a sleek candybar design you should all be relatively familiar with. The iPhone and a slew of Android-based phones look right along these lines, and this looks fabulous. Hollow parts at the top and bottom of the phone “ensure that it is being charged wirelessly” though how that’s accomplished appears to be a trade secret. The phone is thin, streamlined, and made to fit naturally in the palm of your hand.

Once the phone is placed in its cradle, the magnets inside begin to do their work. Once charging begins, the magnetic stick is puled away from the column and the phone floats. As the phone begins to float, the screen of the phone turns to a pre-selected screen of the users choice, one of several scenes: water gradually rising or falling or blue sand in an hourglass, for example. As most cellphones are charged at night, a dim light is emitted from the back of the charge unit for a unique atmosphere (and a simple way for you to be able to find the phone if you’ve got to get to it in the dark.)

When a call comes in, things get REAL interesting. Magnets on the bottom of the cradle activate, forcing the phone to rotate. Text and icon activation on the screen of the phone appear three-dimensional “due to an after-image effect.” This situation also occurs upon receiving a text message or your alarm clock rings. The designers of this project aim for this effect to convey vibrancy which cannot be experienced with a static screen, and vitality through animated graphics on the screen as the phone rotates as well.

What a wild and wacky and fantastical concept!

The cute little Mobile Tail instantly transforms your phone to a viewing display. The heartening inspiration behind this tail is One Hundred and One Dalmatians; thus the Dalmatian tail. Its crafted from flexible liquid silicone rubber (LSR) a non-reactive, high-purity material and attaches to any device via the suction cup. MINIMA Lattice Style Flip Phone By Seung-Hyun Yoon

MINIMA Lattice Style Flip Phone By Seung-Hyun Yoon

The MINIMA is a classic example of how important form is in the design process. The adorable lattice style for keypads and the wood finish, relay a completely organic look. Specific attention to details like the camouflaged secondary display on the outer flip and bamboo look, make this an object of desire. It looks like a refined version of the Maple Phone, don’t you think?

EXO Smartphone Concept By Benjamin Lotte

EXO Smartphone Concept By Benjamin Lotte

You got to agree that the skeletal system is a genius of design; it protects the delicate organs inside while giving support to our lustrous skin. If we were to apply the same design for our mobile phones then its quite possible to wipe out the peripheral phone covers and cases industry. Im talking about the LG Exo Smartphone Concept. The key feature in this concept is a high strength polymer exoskeleton for protecting the delicate internal components while supporting its external rubber skin.

The end result is a good-looking phone that does not require any protective case that mars its beauty. You get to enjoy the phone in its intended avatar! The reason why I relate to this concept is that my gorgeous iPhone lies hidden beneath this hideous cover, lest it falls down and cracks!

Gravity Phone By Lukas Doenz Joachim Kornauth Toni Weichselbraun And Max Salesse

Gravity Phone By Lukas Doenz Joachim Kornauth Toni Weichselbraun And Max Salesse

Hello high definition. Four awesome designers bring you an HD cellular / mobile phone with a lovely shape, a flat screen with the highest definition, and most excellently, a fabulous presentation. This is the “Gravity Series” phone concept and it “offers HD technology within the dimensions of your pocket.” Of course, if you’ve got those pants that have the notebook sized pockets, it might be better to go with that, but this one is lighter, despite the title of this post.

This line of telephone will allow for upgradeable components, plug em in and plug em out, switch em how you please. There’ll be full expandability allowing for perfect usability. Your personal needs fulfilled by an open market and a uniquely shaped telephone.

I mean look at it! It has that extra bar on there. It must do something fantastic! I bet it lets you play some fantastic games. And that side view? That is just sensual. I bet it’s a dream to hold.

Home Sweet Home By Bruno Oro

Home Sweet Home By Bruno Oro

Transporter of ideas. Yes, it’s Star Trek time. Not only is this a food scanner, it’s a food producer. A food cloner, able to transport information over long distances via technology we’ve got already today, replicating the food then with math. Mathematical equations make all things possible. Some science, too, and some goo. Made by the designer specifically to recreate a Grandmother’s dish for supper. Exact copy.

I’ll take the lasagna designer Bruno Oro tells me about in his description of this project. Delicious lasagna made by grandma, put partway into the device for a bit of a scan, sent over a network to her grandson’s device, ready to push the GO button when he gets there. Made fresh.

Once your device has got the data your grandmother sent, you put the device by a plate. Once beside the plate, the device stretches a protective gel cover inside which the food is replicated. The goo is in place so that the molecules in your hands don’t get warped into a piece of cake.

That said, I worry a little bit about a “The Fly” situation where you turn a bug into a piece of pizza, eat it, then turn into a fly.

Real stuff.
