Lamp Fire – Lighting by Creative Session

I love a design that takes inspiration from a familiar fragment to stimulate the viewer’s memory and imagination. Lamp Fire is one of these creative concepts and is reminiscent of the campfires that many of us experienced as children. It’s a clever way of enjoying campfire conversations from the comfort of home!

Breathtaking Seascape Photography by Jose Pombo

Lisbon-based photographer Jose Pombo is another light master who likes taking photos at sunrise and sunset, preferably near water. Even though he modestly refers to himself as an amateur photographer, believe us, his work is anything but amateur. The landscape photographer captures stunning images of vast seascapes that whisks a viewer away into a fantasy world. Even though you can see the bridge and silhouettes of buildings in the pictures, it is still hard to believe these unbelievable tranquil scenery existed in real life. Love these works!

Unusual Table Designs Animals Emerging out of Glass Top

If you are looking for some unusual coffee and dinning tables, you’d better check this out. Mark Stoddart‘s Animal Tables are quite interesting alternative to what we see in normal furniture stores. A transparent glass table top is pierced by the body of an animal, making it look like the beast is emerging out of the water. There are different versions, like hippo, rhino, elephant and dog. In each table sculpture, the designer bolted the animal to the glass surface, securing it with handmade PTF grommets. Something like these tables will diffidently be a focal point at your home.

Timeless Capture Concept Camera by Brian Matanda

With his project Timeless Capture designer Brian Matanda wants us to slowdown and literally smell the roses before we take a picture of them. Our focus is on tech-specs, angle shots and apps that add artificial glam. In a way the subject of our photography looses its relevance. So let’s re-focus on the art of photography, and by the way this camera is a combination of sand blasted aluminum and polished teak and ‘strong archetypal form to produce a timeless aesthetic.’

Here is how it works:

The product is in two parts, a camera and a viewer. The captured images are immediately downloaded directly to the viewer wirelessly once the camera is in close proximity. It is also the sole access point to the images, as the camera has no LCD display. Through the use of a touch screen interface, the user is able to view the images as and when they choose. With limited storage capacity, the user is encouraged to take control of the content thereby making the experience arbitrary.

Push Pull Handle by Tommaso Gecchelin

Admit it- you’ve approached a door and had trouble figuring out whether to push or pull. Even though we’ve all experienced this, it can still be embarrassing! Here’s a solution: the Push/Pull Affordance Rotating Handle was developed from a series of cognitive tests that revealed a correlation between handle shape and the directional guess the user has to make. When the user sees its flat surface they will push, and when they see the pointed surface they will pull. It’s a simple concept, but oh-so-smart!

Hesus – Rocking Horse Chair by J.Key Schneyorson

The rocking horse is one design that has been a bit played out as there hasn’t been much variation in either shape or style since it first started appearing in homes. This abstract take on the rocker puts emphasis on the structure in a stainless steel version that symbolizes the mere essence of the classic rocking horse. The bare-bones frame is complimented by a braided leather strip seat that gives a subtle nod to its archetypal inspiration.

Futuristic Underwater Hotel for Dubai

Two years ago, we talked about the worlds first undersea restaurant which can also converted to a private bedroom on our site. It is nice but not as impressive as the one shown in today’s post. The Water Discus Underwater Hotel, the conceptual design of Deep Ocean Technology is designed as a modern and aquatic alternative to the mundane hotels in the Middle East.

The grand structure features several discs both above and below water. The central tower adjoins a saucer-shaped space approximately five to seven meters above sea level with another mobile one that is generally stationed about ten meters underwater. The lower deck has the ability to resurface above water in the event of an emergency. Otherwise, guests can enjoy one of the twenty-one suites in the lower disc that offers comfort with the additional visual benefit of the natural marine environment. It will be lovely to explore the depths of the ocean while taking advantage of the warm climate.

Safe Card Credit Card Design by Kyoung Mo Baek, Jang Won Park & Jang Hyun Woo

In my part of the world, Credit Card scams are an everyday occurrence. So the companies have gotten smart and allocate us a one-time-pin (OTP) for online shopping but still have to wise-up to forgery and misuse in the physical world. Safe Card is a protective option that allows you to use a Credit Card only after you unlock it with a password. Offering a second tier of security is the option to enter the exact amount to the card interface, so that only the specified amount is charged.

I just feel that you cant be too safe with plastic money, heck I even have an opaque tape hiding my CVV number!

PARASITE – Photovoltaic Urban Lamp by Mark Beccaloni

Unless you live in a vibrant city like Kula Lumpur, where you have such ornate streetlamps, chances are that you are stuck with drab energy draining streetlamps. Parasite is a Photovoltaic Lamp that parasitically hooks onto existing lamps and scaffoldings, primping the old. The PV cell system is modeled on the system designed by Spectrolab.

As the designer explains, The cells are high in efficiency and use triple junction PV cells, brought to earth after extensive use in space. Their power depends on their nanotech wafer of GaAs (gallium arsenide), a modern material that has nothing to do with common Si (silicon) photovoltaic. These cells work at atmosphere 1 with extreme efficiency and can be forced further with a Fresnel lens, supporting a light intensity up to 1000 suns if correctly refrigerated. I estimated a 260-watt peak production in normal conditions while just covering far less than a square meter surface with these marvelous GaAs cells. Parasite tilts from a relaxed neutral position to 30 in order to harvest energy at its maximum, LED lights grant low consumption and produce an abundant number of lux.

Unusual Fingerprints Art by Ingrid Aspck

Instead of constantly trying to wipe away the smudged fingerprints all over those shining surface, Austrian graphic artist and illustrator Ingrid Aspck instead decided to be inspired and imagined these whimsical fingerprint adventures. She says, In spite of being annoyed by them, I find them quite charming as they give this fancy technical device a human touch. By doing so, Aspck embraces fingerprints and patterns them into adorable little stories – An orchestra conductor and an audience, a rock star and crowds of fellow music-lovers, and a superhero saving the day. It is so clever and unique to create something out of those unwanted little downsides! We are looking forward to see more creation like this.

Clean Label Soda Can Cleaner by Meixian Su, Fengming Chen & Yujie Chen

A Clean Label is a low cost protective label that prevents you from drinking from a contaminated soda can. If we take the user scenario seriously, I agree with the notion that we tend to take swig from the can, without even cleaning it. It’s a subconscious act and yes, we are filthyme included! This simple can-clip redesign adds a cleaning filament that swipes the can-surface clean in a jiffy. Cheers to a germ-free drink!

Manta – Acoustic Installation by Studio Bernal

This unique ceiling installation by Studio Bernal aims to create ever-so-subtle changes in a room’s acoustic and visual atmospheres by making articulated changes in the form of its surface. Inspired the the animal of the same name, the Manta makes adjustments in position through multi-modal input including sound, stereoscopic vision, touch, and even brainwaves, changing according to the actions of the people around it.

The installation was built in Studio 1 at EMPAC, which is an acoustically inert space, so the designers were able to audibly perceive how geometry affects sound in realtime.
