Rush Hour Watch By Daniel Will – Harris

Rush Hour Watch By Daniel Will - Harris

On our never-ending travels from the birth to the grave, there’s lots of minutes, hours, waiting for years to pass, all the loveliness and ickiness of the world traveling about us. But then there’s the seconds. The tiny ants carrying the picnic of our lives unto the future. Daniel Will-Harris knows this, and seeks to show us every day time moving forward being pushed by seconds. The numbers move, the moment stays the same. This is the “Rush Hour” watch, a highly modern sort of watch.

Take a peek at the flash animation of the way this watch works, then look at the closer-up images of its simple knob and face. Then buy it!

SEIL Bag By Lee Myung Su Park Geun Wan amp Park Okhee For Leemyungsu Designlab

Here is a totally cool backpack that goes by the name of SEIL Bag. Its a backpack meant for cyclists and features an LED Display (flexible PCB) on its face. The bag is designed to work in two modes: Driving Mode and Emotion Mode. In the Driving Mode it shows left and right turn signals for the rider, which is controlled via a detachable controller. This makes it easy for the following traffic to know the riders intent. The cool-quotient is upped with the Emotion Mode; here you can display a variety of emoticons, just for the heck of it.

The bag also displays brake signal, cruse signal and emergency signal; the acceleration sensor detects speed and turns on stop signal automatically. The signals can be controlled intuitively; pushing the lever up, turns on left turn signal and vice versa.

A very classy bag with a lot of use, I really dig the emoticon aspect!

Electrolux Design Lab Finalists039 Designs Mock Up

Socked! Well dont be, because this time the mocking is for a good reason. As a part of their competition procedure, Electrolux Design Lab finalists designs get fabricated as mock-ups and are displayed at the Electrolux Design Lab booth at the 100% Design London fair. Here is a look at how glossy and sleek these futuristic products can look in our homes. As sketches and renders, its difficult to judge how any product will adapt to its environment. Life-size replicas give us a peek at how they will look at home. The engineering and technology bit has been left out for the moment, but then thats what R&D is there forwell let the techies worry about the workings while we celebrate Product Design!

MINIMA Lattice Style Flip Phone By Seung-Hyun Yoon

MINIMA Lattice Style Flip Phone By Seung-Hyun Yoon

The MINIMA is a classic example of how important form is in the design process. The adorable lattice style for keypads and the wood finish, relay a completely organic look. Specific attention to details like the camouflaged secondary display on the outer flip and bamboo look, make this an object of desire. It looks like a refined version of the Maple Phone, don’t you think?

Time Lines Watch By Denis Guidone For NAVA Design

Time Lines Watch By Denis Guidone For NAVA Design

A watch that you place upon your wrist for the purpose of telling the time, but not for time’s sake, for the sake of keeping wonder and playfulness alive. This watch is called “Time Lines” and its apparent improper and random placement of lines in the design create “a dialogue with the clock face,” keeping for itself a unique identity while it tells you when it’s time to go check Yanko for updates.

The designer of this watch is infamous on Yanko for creating some spectacular spectacles, most of them wild watches like this one. Feel free to devour all the works of Denis Guidone and don’t forget the rest of the time we’ve got listed.

No More No Less Faucet By Jasper Hou

No More No Less Faucet By Jasper Hou

How awesome would it be to have a faucet that pre-measures the amount of water you’d like to come out of it before it comes out of it? Designer Jasper Hou is making that fantasy of cooking pleasure a reality with “No More No Less,” a quantitative tap with pre-control. N.M.N.L. does this with a simple countdown, knowing how much water comes out of the tap on full blast times the amount of time it comes out equals the amount you’ll get. Then there’s an LCD screen for control, temperature, and a 30 second on time.

The LCD screen is even powered by the water rushing below it. The 30 second meter turns the faucet off 30 seconds after the last use to make sure there’s no flooding and to assure low energy expenditure.

Infinitea Teapot By Jason Valalik And Jae Lee

Infinitea Teapot By Jason Valalik And Jae Lee

This project goes by the name of “Infinitea” and it’s a project to project the awesomeness of tea unto the stars. Made with just stainless steel, Borosilicate glass, magnets, and heat resistant rubber. What this pot does is allow you to see the whole tea-to-boiling-water steeping and unfurling. Where before it was a two step process and not the most fun in the world, now it’s just one. And that one step IS the most fun in the world. Then you get to pour the tea (filtered through the cap) into your cup and drink it, too, bonus!

This project came along, I aught to say, when designer Jason Valalik purchased the lovely Sorapot as designed by Joey Roth. This pot is of course available for purchase in our store, so get over there and buy it! Then listen to the rest of this story – once Jason received the Sorapot, he was very pleased at the main idea – the fact that you get to see the unfurling of tea leaves right before your eyes. But then he wanted less! He wanted not only that part of the process to be included in the pot, he wanted to be able to boil the water in the pot at the same time, and he wanted a different shape!

So, teaming up with Jae Lee, Valalik set to work making this lovely “Infinitea,” which, they’d love to mention, is currently in production limbo. So you! The one with the money! Work with them to make it! And totally cash in, drinking tasty tea while you do it.

Joint Jack Tap Concept By Andrey Bondarenko For 2-B-2 Architecture

Joint Jack Tap Concept By Andrey Bondarenko For 2-B-2 Architecture

Its quite unusual to think of faucets as creative elements, high-end designer goodies yes, but not creative! Well the Joint Jack Tap Concept breaks that myth with its fun outlook and creativity. Basically its just three elements (tap, hot and cold mixers) mounted on spherical joints, allowing you to rotate them in many different ways. “It looks like a group of figures in ancient Russian folk sport “Gorodki” or anti-tank obstacle or British flag (Union Jack) in some positions!” Union Jack is quite amusingdont you think?

Using – kitchen, bathroom.
Dimensions can vary.
Material – stainless steel.

City Jumper Cycle By Tiancheng Luo

City Jumper Cycle By Tiancheng Luo

Question: what does a courier delivery guy need for short-distance deliveries? Answer: an easy transport system that will carry his load of parcels and letters, park in a jiffy and be a steady companion. A City Jumper! This is a bike with a front storage box, 24-inch rear wheel, GPRS navigation frame and oodles of style! Since the front box does not rotate with the handlebars, it is easy to maneuver the bike. And for better stability of the bicycle body when parking, the kickstand has been moved towards the front. However there is something that I have learnt from you YD readers, we cant really judge the efficiency of any cycle concept until we see a working prototype.

*City Jumper Cycle has nothing to do with DHL, images are only for representation.

Control Safety Traffic Light Concept By Roberto Vackflores For CRAB Diseo Industria

Control Safety Traffic Light Concept By Roberto Vackflores For CRAB Diseo Industria

The Control Safety Traffic Light Concept features an LED display that gradually changes the colors from Red to Green, with the Amber (or Yellow) fading in and out; between the changes. Solar panels and a security camera are integrated into the design for obvious reasons, and the whole thing works in conjunction with similarly designed pedestrian lights. Two features make this different from rest of the concepts seen before; emergency vehicles (police, ambulance, fire brigade trucks) are detected from a distance via smart sensors and thus the lights change automatically to facilitate their quick passage. The other thing is that it can display info like road condition, weather, etc., for the drivers sitting idle at the stop sign.

Maroma By Daniel Romero Valencia

Maroma By Daniel Romero Valencia

You know those little ladders, the ones made of wood held together with strips of material in a way that if you hold one up, another one goes *cluck cluck cluck* all the way down to the bottom? Well here’s something sort of kind of like that, but this one’s a lot less cluck and a lot more flexible storage solution for the modern home. “Maroma” modular furniture as it’s called is made of plywood and cotton straps, made so that the user is free to configure it however’s most convenient (or fun) for them. Heck, it’d be impossible not to have fun with these. I dare you.

The inspiration for this project did indeed come from what designer Daniel Romero Valencia knows as “Magic Sticks” – the toy originating in Mexico rather than where I know it to have originated from, that being my aunt’s closet drawer. I trust Valencia’s knowledge more than my own in this case. The Maroma is currently manufactured by PIRWI in certified plywood with a biodegradable finish and cotton straps dyed with vegetable colorants; over 90% of the material used to make it of natural origin.

Pouring Light Lamp By Yeongwoo Kim

Human actions play such a significant role in design; its either evident in the form or in the function. In the Pouring Light, the action is evident in the form and is delightfully executed as well! With the motive of giving off an emotional flow of light, the lights linger on with a mesmerizing effect thanks to the use of phosphorescence in the water part. Yeongwoo suggests the use of LED lights to conserve energy, and my suggestion to him: get this in the market ASAP!

Nocturnal Clock By Saravanan Nagasundaram

Nocturnal Clock By Saravanan Nagasundaram

Clocks, since the sundial, have had that one glaring obstacle they’ve had to hop over: darkness. The sundail’s basically useless, and half the rest of the clocks in the world are pretty close to it. But then there’s the light-up clock. Since we humans set our minds on wanting to work 24 hours a day, we’ve been trying to light up the time. Let me show you the latest in attempts to do that: a clock by Saravanan Nagasundaram, an exercise in both illumination and simplicity.

This time keeper goes by the name “Nocturnal Clock” and it’s made out of simple aluminum and LED lights. Plus a clock mechanism – don’t forget that. In the gallery below you’ll see the simple rules of the clock, when it’s light, when it’s dark, and when it’s fabulously stark.

Visually Impaired Assistant By Noam Klopper

Visually Impaired Assistant By Noam Klopper

A new dimension of sightless awareness equipment. This is the “VIA” Visually Impaired Assistant, a pair of hand-centric devices to make the day of a visually impaired person a whole lot easier. These devices use VMD Video Motion Detection technologies, 4 mini cameras, and a voice operated GPS receiver, all to act as both a walking stick and a mapping system. All the while looking rather fabulous on the hands as sensually molded pieces of jewelry (or “super heavy-duty metal equipment” if you’re too masculine for that sensual “J” word.)

These devices use 2 different vibration mechanisms to guide the user away from obstacles and toward their final bespoken destination. VIA is charged via a wirelessly functioning mat (that incidentally, I wish I had for every one of my other electronic devices.) Totally too perfect. Now watch the video that shows the devices in action and prepare yourself for a totally “awww, love” ending.

Brainovi Braille Navigation Map With 3-D Effects By Seung-Hyun Yoon Seol-Hee Son amp Ji-Youn Kim

The Brainovi is a Braille navigation map that uses a combination of verbal instructions and touch display, to help a blind person travel alone. All he needs to do is speak his destination into the device and wait for a 3-D map to pop-up, giving him a feel of his route. Corresponding verbal directions are relayed to the user via a Bluetooth earpiece, thus guiding him to his destination. The overall effect is to give the user a sense of freedom while traveling alone, without depending upon a companion.

Or do you think it will be a distraction and a hazard? The idea is simple.holographic red triangle projected from a distance, warning you of a stalled car ahead in the lane. Some may argue it being an eerie Potter-esque sign on the freeway; others may call it helpful. Take your pick!

Sphyrna Outdoor Lighting System Concept By FORMBOTEN

Sphyrna Outdoor Lighting System Concept By FORMBOTEN

Inspired by the head of a shovel, (and quote obviously also by the head of a certain fancy looking shark,) this is the modular street lighting system Sphyrna. Designed by FORMBOTEN, that fantastic design team from Hannover, this system is modular not only in its head, but in its height as well. The various lamp heads make this system suitable for the urban lighting of roads, roundabouts (if you’re anywhere that isn’t the USA,) or outdoor shopping malls. And bonus! There’s a fancy seat to go with the system!

You know what else this system reminds me of? Vacuum cleaner heads. The kind where you use the hose to clean inside your couch and such. Modular plugging should be applied everywhere it could be appropriate. Plugging and playing are the two best things about our modern design world!

Deluxe Tray For Apple Keyboard Remote And Trackpad By Combine Collective

Urban Arrow Smart Urban Mobility By Urban Arrow

Urban Arrow Smart Urban Mobility By Urban Arrow

Take a look at this bike which sets its sights on the future, one with real competitors to the automobile that sucks the life from the earth every day and night. This is the “Urban Arrow,” a transport bike with electric pedal assistance, aluminum frame, and a box made ofsuper light EPP-material. It’s green, they say it’ll be affordable, it’s comfortable, it’s light enough to lift, and aesthetically, it’s super fresh.

In many parts of the world there are two cars per family of two adults. Urban Arrow aims to replace that second car for inner city usage. There’s a frame that encapsulates the motor and chair, a curved tube around the top of the box protecting the fingers of children riding inside and providing storage room for rain cover poles and a lock or pump.

The electric assist and the smallness of the bike allow you simple and quick access to the city, allowing you to travel with up to 180kg of cargo. In first gear they say you’ll be able to effortlessly climb a hill.

With the lightweight EPP cargo box and an aluminum stiff frame, plus 60mm of high dense foam inside this bike is both safe and relatively lightweight. There’s an optional rain cover, cup holders, grocery net, fixed – yet adjustable – bolt seat post, removable box (transformable into a flat-bed cargo space,) and comfortable balloon tires (which aren’t like balloons of yore – these aren’t as easy to pierce.
