Watch Diary By Wonjune Song

Watch Diary By Wonjune Song

In the day and age where electronic gadgets double up as reminders of tasks and appointments, I applaud Wonjune Songs bold move to go back to the basics of pen and paper and of course the trusty old watch. Watch Diary is basically a book with a clock set in the middle of the page. The red hand indicates the current task, the before hand indicates past chores and the forward hand indicates the upcoming ones. A simple glance at the page and youll know if youve kept up your schedule or are lagging. If you can key in the text to your gadget, you may as well pen it down in this diary. My only suggestion would be to include an alarm system that can be used as a reminder.

On second thoughts, maybe its perfect just this waysback to the gadget-free days!

DUESPHERE FAMILY By NOTE Design Studio

DUESPHERE FAMILY By NOTE Design Studio

Note design studio presents a set of spherical lamps on top of wooden bases, each of them inspired by the tiny organisms that spring from the forest floor like tiny candles. Yes, Note, walking around in the forest looking for inspiration, finding hidden in the green moss small families of fungi. In response, these loving lamps. Each lamp is designed for low energy lights made to keep our natural inspiration safe as long as possible, moss and fungi and all.

The two larger of this “Duesphere Family” have hand-blown glass spheres that diffuse light, the smallest of the lamps is based on a “low energy globe” made to be the same size as the turned wood base. Set these up throughout your house to attract fairies and butterfly ghosts and gnomes and elves that make cookies and all manner of wonderful myth.

Edgewire Coffee Table By Alex Sacchetti

Edgewire Coffee Table By Alex Sacchetti

All the way from Italy comes designer Alex Sacchetti with a table. Not just any table, nay, this is a table made of glass and shaped aluminum. Shaped in a unique sort of shape and made to appear at home in any number of aesthetically diverse locations. The transparent glass, both elegant and universally beautiful, is 12mm thick, supported in full by the major structure made out of pure aluminum. Put your monograms on there, your artist books and hardcover magazines.

This table goes by the name “Edgewire” and is not for putting your feet up on. So probably don’t put this in the room where your children run around and crash their heads into the edges of tables. DO put it in your fine local lobby or young adult/non-baby household living room.

Triangular Taxi-Top Billboards By Bluemap Design

Triangular Taxi-Top Billboards By Bluemap Design

Bluemap Design in collaboration with Show Media, Inc. and Distec GMbH present a brand new billboard box for the tops of New York City taxi cabs, that never-ending sea of yellow, black, and white on wheels. For many years there’s been a triangular plastic box up there and heck, it’s time for a change. This new box is sleek, simple, metal, LED lit, recyclable, makes the ad easier to view and read, and will be fitted to cabs across the city starting as soon as the end of September 2010.

The images on these billboard boxes are clearer and much better lit than they were on the plastic bloated and aged toppers the cabs have at the moment. There’s a super clear, legible availability status and medalion number on the front and back of the box, and the entire device is simple to install on all manner of connectors already on current cabs.

The box is bright with new generation LED backlighting providing low energy consumption and working in tangent with effective digital graphic reproduction processes. “Harmonized Design/Engineering allows all generated light to be concentrated exclusively on advertising and functional communications.” That means it’s not just a black blocker with letters blasting through with light – the entire image is lit like it always should have been, illuminating the message in a precise, nice, glowing manner.

The frame is made of strong aluminum ready for the harshest of weather conditions which it WILL see because I don’t know if you’ve been to NYC, but it gets both hella cold AND hella hot.

Finally, maybe best of all, and almost just for fun at this point since this board is more than amazing already, the amount of EMI emissions from the board are lower than ever before. What’s that mean? There’s less radio interference, and your iPhone works better. Wild.

Block22 IPad Stand By SherwoodMeister

Block22 IPad Stand By SherwoodMeister

Oh, to be held by a block of wood. The warm embrace of Mother Nature herself, all chopped down to a convenient size for us humanoids. Or in this case, us pieces of technological wonder. This is a stand for the iPad, the “Block22″ to be exact, and it’s mainly made of wood. Designers at Sherwood+Meister have created a masterpiece in simplicity and craftsmanship. Each piece is carved from a solid block of FSC-certified kiln-dried Ipe wood – a South American hardwood “prized for its enduring strength and density.” Ohh! Super fancy.

Each piece of wood used in the creation of the Block22 is harvested according to Forest Stewardship Council criteria, ensuring fair compensation for workers and sustainable harvesting techniques. After the carving and hand-stamping with polished aluminum accents, each Block22 is hand-rubbed with a fabulous satin finish.

The Block22’s groove is designed to match the iPad’s sensual curves in the most warm embrace, no matter the orientation, in a way that allows you easy access to all the buttons and switches. Along the bottom is 100% wool felt padding to provide a secure footing during use.

One Glass For Every Drink By Sven MILCENT amp The Utopik Design Lab

One Glass For Every Drink By Sven MILCENT amp The Utopik Design Lab

Sven MILCENT & the Utopik Design Lab have done it! They’ve taken our entire collected evolution of cup-making and holding of drink history and combined it into one cup. One cup to hold them all. This is “One Glass for Every Drink” and it’s made to work for everyone. It of course tends to the four main glass-specific types of drink: water, cognac, wine, and champagne. It uses the same head and a different base for each of these. Sounds lovely doesn’t it? Let’s have a sip or two and talk about it.

This isn’t the first interchangeable base cup we’ve had here on Yanko, and it wont be the last. It’s a fantastic idea and deserving of a slew of attempts at it in order to make it perfect. Here’s one with some really fabulous ideas, and rather elegant ones if I do say so myself.

And while we’re at it, I’ve got to say that my favorite drink glass in the world must be the snifter – looked after here closely by that cognac glass on it’s side. Very sassy. Very nice. Very on it’s side where it definitely aught to be, havin a great time.

Line Block Cable By Lee Ji Eun Yi-Seo Hyeon Heo-Hyeoksu amp Jeong Minhui

Line Block Cable By Lee Ji Eun Yi-Seo Hyeon Heo-Hyeoksu amp Jeong Minhui

The problem addressed in the Line Block Cable is so true to home, its the one most of us face when we hook up too many gadgets in one area. Not that we can help it, its ideal to have the TV, CD player and the music housed together. As a result, their cables leading up to the socket can get messy and unsightly. Line Block cables are constructed in such a way that they can tag 2 or more wires in a piggy-back fashion. Essentially this means that if the gadgets have this unique structured cable, they line up one-atop-the-other and split out only near the socket, to give a neat finish.

This also means a whole new perspective to the wire and cables industry!

Watch ONe By Igor Chak

Watch ONe By Igor Chak

Here is a neat idea that allows you to play with the different faces for a watch. The Watch oNe basically features an E-Ink display which is LED back lit, but its face is not constant, meaning you can change it at whim or fancy. Hook the watch up to the internet and download your kinda face to it. Designers have a choice to upload their creativity to the on-line store, for others to purchase. So the possibilities with this one watch are endless mechanical, digital, classic, futuristic, complexany type of face can be downloaded (via micro USB port) for use.

The physical watch can also be interchanged with different parts using a range of colors and materials. Constructed out of abs plastic, sapphire glass, stainless steel and fine leather; Watch oNe is going on sale in March 2011 for $350

Landscape Superyacht By Jun Han Song

Landscape Superyacht By Jun Han Song

Behold one gigantic yacht for the folks of the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. This is “Landscape,” a yacht made to provide an ideal location for you to have fun on the boat and off, no comfort done without. The Landscape is a 75 meter trimaran with a 20 meter beam. Huge, giant, unbelievably magnificently large. There’s a staircase into the sea, a sun deck, a lounge and dining area under a canopy, a giant main deck with open floor, and cabins, galley, conference room below.

Designer Jun Han Song informs us that this Landscape would have a wider beam than any other super yacht to provide the widest amount of space for awesome activities. A staircase surrounds the main deck creating the island-like “Landscape” feel to the boat. Staircases along the sides of the boat provide a similar effect. A canopy is attached to the masts to protect the passengers from weather, meanwhile an outdoor shower is attached for people who’ve swam and would like a non-saltwater shower. The canopy also serves as lighting so there can be parties on into the night. The bridges on the upper and main deck are connected by a spiral staircase for quick changes from outdoors to in for the sailor hitting quick bad weather.

The entire boat transforms. Not into a robot, but for more submersion. Inside the boat there are water tanks that fill up on your command causing the vessel to submerge like a submarine. Once the boat is lower, the staircases slide down mimicking a sand beach allowing water accessibility and ocean interaction. Also once submerged, the boat releases two tender docks (7.5m x 3m x 2m) which can be slid out from the boat.

The Landscape yacht gets around on wind power and solar power. Wind by sailing and by using Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) located in the masts. These turbines generate electric energy from the wind whether the boat is at rest or sailing. This energy can be used to propel the yacht or to power lights and other electronics on the boat. The solar power is collected through several solar panels located around the ship: the top surface of the upper forward deck, the staircase, and the canopy.

I would live here. Thanks very much.

Ever since I can remember having been conscious of my teeth, I’ve gone to the dentist. When I went there as a child, I would get a “free” toothbrush, floss, and a prize! Nagisa Phone Concept By Mac Funamizu

Nagisa Phone Concept By Mac Funamizu

There are two key elements to the Nagisa Phone designed by Mac Funamizu, first is the dented keypad, akin to a wavy seabed and the second is the display that literally turns around the bend. This time Mac seems to have mellowed in his designing sensibilities and not gone outlandishly futuristic. Whats more, he simply concentrates on beautifying the form; note the rounded back and the slight elevation when laid flat on a table. Apparently Nagisa means beach in Japanese, and this iteration is at its tranquil best.

Keeping your wits during an emergency evacuation of a building is easier said than done. If its a hotel or an unfamiliar mall, following the leads can be difficult and even confusing at times. The LED Escape Light is a portable LED electric torch meant to tackle this issue of unfamiliarity. It comes with a built-in projector that projects a map to guide you out accurately. I like the handy stand that it is housed in, with an easy grab-and-run vibe.

Ribbon Lamp By Damien Urvoy

Ribbon Lamp By Damien Urvoy

It’s a fabulous link between plastic and wood. Yes, plastic and wood, the most amazing two materials in the world! But look – in this case the plastic is flexible and the wood is rigid. The plastic embraces the light to protect you from it and to diffuse the warm color. The wood… it’s natural. The lamp is sold unassembled to save space during transport and so that at the end of the life of the lamp, each piece can be separated and recycled in the most pure way. No glue or nails needed.

This is a fantastic trend, things coming to you in pieces. I’m sure you’re completely aware that this is one of the essential ideas behind the IKEA chain. It makes things so much simpler for the store and so much cheaper for the consumer, the consumer whose completely capable of putting their furniture, lamps, and silverware containers and accessories together themselves. Everyone loves DIY!

And now this lamp! What a lovely little dish!

Reputation-Check Instruments By Hayeon Yoo

Reputation-Check Instruments By Hayeon Yoo

A reaction to a reaction, that’s what this is. I’d even go so far as to say this is a reaction to a reaction to a reaction. That’s where it gets really good in art, especially good in design. This project goes by the name “Reputation Check” and it comes in two parts: Acoustic and Graphic. Both are inspired by what designer Hayeon Yoo calls the side-effects of internet communication: anonymous, malicious comments tied with people’s obsession with checking their online reputation.

These two instruments explore “alternative sensory experience design,” creating a new level of interaction between the user and these otherwise “informal but influential” or what I’d say are influential yet untouchable pieces of data and information.

The Acoustic Instrument speaks comments left for you on the internet. Volume of traffic directly affects the speed at which the comments are read. If you’re interested in the comment, the colored element of the instrument can be slid in or out to adjust the speed to hear the content at an understandable rate.

The Graphic Instrument displays comments from the internet in text form. The first step shows the most common words. Number of pixels represent amount of traffic on checked websites. Sliding the colored element adjusts the size of the letters, allowing you to read phrases otherwise rendered illegible.

Future Living - Housing Project By Various Designers

The Future Living house is a testament to the will of design. It took twenty six designers (a feat in itself) to create it. Every technologic leap was analyzed to make sure anything proposed was possible by 2050. It’s a paradigm shift in home resource creation and location. Water uses gravity to generate pressure. Energy is harvested from solar and wind apparatuses. Air, water and waste are cleaned using a living bio wall and everything is recycled when possible.

Le Orchidee Desk By Marc Fish Of Fish Contemporary Furniture

Look at this amazing desk. It’s designed by a designer with a most fabulous name: Marc Fish. The desk, called Le Orchidee, is highly influenced by a desk at Musee d Orsay in Paris – a desk by the same name. Many cues were taken from the designer of the original desk (Marorelle,) not the least of which was using groundbreaking techniques utilizing design research and experimentation. One of the results is the fabulous seamless tambour roll top – appearing to be one solid piece of wood this top is actually veneered canvas layered upon strips of wood.

Fish informs us that the technique used to attain the effect of the desk top had never before been used on a desk. That’s hot. You’ll see in the gallery below the lovely drawers and sassy angles that make up this fantastic looking desk. Put all your golden paper clips in it.

Peter Alwin039s Snail Concept Wins Electrolux Design Lab 2010

Peter Alwin039s Snail Concept Wins Electrolux Design Lab 2010

Eight amazing designers from around the would took turns presenting their ideas to a panel of four very tough judges. We were taken aback by the amazing mockups Electrolux provided. This was a dream come true for many as it is often rare to see a physical model of your design. We felt nervous at the pit of our stomachs for them. The judges scrutinized every nuance of each concept. They praised what needed to be praised, but made sure each designer knew where the flaws were – perhaps a good lesson.

Peter Alwin039s Snail Concept Wins Electrolux Design Lab 2010

Yurly Dmitriev’s Bio Robot Refrigerator scored the people’s choice award racking up more public votes than anyone else. The concept glorified the use of tiny robots overseeing food suspended in a biopolymer gel. It’s an idea that perfectly straddles the realms of science fiction and what people believe a kitchen in 2050 could look like.

Peter Alwin039s Snail Concept Wins Electrolux Design Lab 2010

However it was the Snail that won the judges favors. Certainly a surprise to many including us. It’s a wonderful concept that uses micro induction heating to cook food. It offers a paradigm shift in how people in the future might prepare meals. Gone are ovens and stovetops. All you need is a pot and a couple of Snails – blurring the lines between home and portable cooking. Congratulations to designer Peter Alwin. Who knew inspiration could come from a gastropod?

What a whirlwind this first day has been! We’ve got interviews to do, people to see, and more amazing concepts to scout. Electrolux Design Lab, as usual, pulled out all the stops. The staging is beautiful and the talks about Scandinavian design really hits home for those in love with the far north aesthetic. We’ve got tons more to show you but in the meantime, please check out our EDL 2010 flickr gallery.

There was this scene in the movie History of the World where Mel Brooks plays the Piss Boy and the royalty pay him the fee for his bucket service by dropping his tip into the bucket! Funny scene; but the truth is women cant pee in the same bucket or urinal! Not unless everyone is peeing in the We P Unisex Urinal. The design is self-explanatory, so Im leaving you boys for a loo-break! Too much of P talk here!

RowRay By Troels hman

RowRay By Troels hman

Made for adults as well as children, this is the row-tastic exercise tool, similar to a city bike, where you’re able to rent, ride, and return without worry. Intended for low traffic areas, woodlands, beach, park and residential areas. Great for all sorts of forms of golf, row your way into the future of exercise and shared vehicle usage. It’s called the “RowRay,” and it’s made to sit at the back and row with your arms. This vehicle’s stripped down to the bare essentials so that you can use it, or carry it over a river if you’re on the Oregon trail, or row REALLY FAST if you’re in a RowRay race.

Head on over to the local RowRay stand, pay with your cellphone, and row around all day with your friends and family. Made specifically for families with an abundance of energy and lots of drive to roll around the city or along the country road or on some loving giant trails in the forest. Row 2 handles at once or back and forth between the two.

The Arc Chair By Zbigniew Strzebonski

The Arc Chair By Zbigniew Strzebonski

Designer Zbigniew Strzebonski set himself up a challenge: to translate a piece of urban architecture into a small bit of interior architecture. In this case, a seat. A seat to start with and a seat to finish. The start was a lovely row of seats sitting in the tram stations of Dublin. The end product is a fabulous see-through seat called “The Arc Chair,” with a surprising splash of green! Made out of a 10mm thick acrylic sheet, 20mm plywood, foam, and felt. Straight outta Poland AND Ireland.

The final shape of the arc was formed with a CNC router in the Klearex factory in Balydoil (Dublin, Ireland.) The final shape of the chair body was made using thermoforming technology. Strzebonski informs us that the most effective way he’s found to make it is by jet cutting and multimould formers. Very fun techniques for a really wild chair, the most basic and essential of sculptures for a modern industrial designer.

Dimensions: H 720mm, D 450mm, W 740mm
