Induction Iron By Therese Glimskar In Collaboration With BASF

Induction Iron By Therese Glimskar In Collaboration With BASF

The brief was to optimize the application of BASFs plastic material ULTRADUR and the result was an Induction Iron. Utilizing ULTRADURs heat resistant heat resistant properties to his advantage, Therese came up with a bare minimal design that has been stripped down to the essentials. This cordless induction heating iron works through an electromagnetic field that transforms the energy directly and heats only the ironing plate. You may recollect the ironing board that is being used here, it’s that same flip-mirror one we showcased earlier.

MYDNA Bookcase By Joel Escalona

MYDNA Bookcase By Joel Escalona

Returning lumberjack slash designer Joel Escalona has a bookcase for us all that gets back to basics in a real metaphorical way. Or is it physical? What I DO have the real 411 on is the fact that this is definitely not for putting in the corner. Definitely this DNA is made for the center of the room. All seeing!

Escalona defines this particular case as a definer of “a significant part of your personal identity.” You bet! Fill this up with things with 4 sides. All seeing this is indeed because everyone from all sides can see it.

This ain’t no big brother, it’s the Book brother!

ZAMP Concept Guitar Amp By Aki Hirota

ZAMP Concept Guitar Amp By Aki Hirota

You read that right. The first technical term written in the “about” of this project sent to me is the WAF factor of this amp. It’s got a good WAF – it’s made for indoor use, not supposed for the garage. Aki Hirota’s made this amp to be for those who aren’t aiming to be in a band. The users of this particular bit of equipment are aiming to just jam on the singular personal tip.

To be clear once again here: the design is an AMP. It’s got a really good WAF number. The cabinet surrounding the amp is made of one piece of bent ply-wood and can be manufactured to have the minimum amount of glue and toxic materials. Too bad it needs any at all! What do you think of that?

It can be made in any number of any different finished colors, even made to match your guitar. Inside is a solid-state amp with a vacuum tube preamp section. The tubes are what you can see up there on top. They’re protected by a clear polycarbonate cylinder.

Front baffle is a custom-cut CNC machined wood piece, unique upon request to each amp unit. Made for no-concert-use only!

AquaIris Portable Water Purifier By Talia Radford

AquaIris Portable Water Purifier By Talia Radford

AquaIris Portable Water Purifier is meant for folks in the tropical regions and is packaged as a really sexy looking bottle. The reusable removable filter is attached to a lanyard that sports all the usage instructions. You need to fill the water into the bottle and insert the filter into the special slot. The water travels under a layer of converter crystals where germicidal UVC rays directly hit every water molecule passing by, thus making it pure and safe to drink.

Gimme Shelter By Rojkind Arquitectos

Gimme Shelter By Rojkind Arquitectos

The Mongolian steppe is no place to linger but thousands of people still lead nomadic lifestyles in this harsh environment. Today’s nomads can travel farther and faster thanks to modern rails and road networks but still live in temporary tents or cave dwellings. Gimme Shelter is an improved cave dwelling taking advantage of the unique typology. It provides superior thermal protection while offering many modern amenities for traveling families.

The partially submerged building provides warmth while efficiently circulating cool air during the hot dry summers. There are several living units for many families with gardens and public spaces spread across 1,000 square meters. The interiors are studded with apertures to allow crosswinds. The layout is somewhat playful with a series of bridges connecting 4 levels. All of this is really happening sometime in 2010. This is nomadic living for the 21st century.

KaputtR Demolition Robot By Tony Weichselbraun

KaputtR Demolition Robot By Tony Weichselbraun

Did you watch the Seattle Kingdome demolition in 2000? That stadium was brought down by implosion techniques; however its not necessary to resort to kabooms every time you want to bring down walls or buildings. To knock them off safely something like the Kaputt.R Demolition Robot should suffice.

Features:

  • Kaputt.R has a folded two-armed architecture that allows a wide range of motion.
A counter-weight effectively balances the extended arms.
  • It is propelled by 4 electric caterpillar tracks, allowing a wide and stable stance without exceeding the maximum load-bearing capacity of the floor.
  • A selection of tools can be attached, such as a buzz-saw, plow, or high precision tools like the power gun.
  • The Powergun was inspired by conventional explosive demolition.
  • To curb pollution and additional waste (wiring, casings, etc.) the Powergun uses propane gas as its shockwave source.
  • It directs pressure waves of propane gas explosions in a linear direction, effectively weakening walls by shooting holes through them. The wall can then easily be knocked down.

Remotion Remote Control By Ryan Sorrell

Remotion Remote Control By Ryan Sorrell

When the Nintendo Wii came along, the world changed. The world of video games, the world of remote controls, that particular world. We got up, we went outside, and we started to play sports and do exercise for entertainment again! Oh wait that didn’t happen at all! We might go there again someday but for now, our world’s got things like Ryan Sorrell’s “Remotion” – Nintendo not affiliated.

Up and down for volume, left and right for channel changing. How much simpler can you get? I imagine a bit of carpal tunnel for those surfers who are extra intense into high-volume channeling. Watch out for THAT.

Digital Clay By Isabel Lizardi

Digital Clay By Isabel Lizardi

What if a material could be manipulated both digitally and physically through a seamless two-directional interaction?
As a designer you know that there are limitations to the sketching, renderings and imaging that one does. Despite the 3D images, you still need to translate your ideas into an actual physical form. The existing human-computer interface designs limit our tactile faculties. The Digital Clay is an attempt to surpass the physical and digital divide via touch.

“Digital clay is a material interface that helps satisfy the needs of todays technologically driven society by providing the means for new forms of remote physical communication and interactions. This interface has important implications for areas ranging from design, to communication and entertainment. As a physical 3D modeling tool, it is the first step towards a future of materials with the ability to transfer three-dimensional information digitally, democratizing digital technologies for all users. The interface creates a two-way interaction between a digital interface and a physical surface, allowing users to manipulate physical objects through the computer, or vice versa. This creates a system where users can manipulate forms physically and digitally through a seamless two-directional interaction.”

Radio Valerie By Valentin Vodev

Radio Valerie By Valentin Vodev

You will never find a more chilled out radio than this. “Radio Valerie.” No buttons, no switches. At least none that are immediately apparent. Reveal to yourself the simplicity. To tune the radio, pull the antenna back and forth along the station markers. The speaker face turns the radio on, the speaker face turns it off, and the speaker face controls the volume. And of course the antenna increases the signal reception. Super chill.

I wonder, should I have such a device in my possession, were I to listen to metal music, would the radio move itself into a more metal position? Perhaps with the adult contemporary… a swaying relaxation?

Any way you tease it, this radio has personality.

Ten Creative Camera Concepts

Ten Creative Camera Concepts

The camera is one gadget that gets me jittery. We have come a long way from the pin hole to the digitalized era; but the abundant options and navigations in the current ones leave me all confused. One time, I almost managed to ruin my African Safari photographs coz I forgot to switch the focus from manual to automatic! However, here is a look at ten concept cameras for the future that are conspiring to leave me as the amateur photographer, while you folks become the pro.

10) The Canon Snap by David Mnscher

tencam10

A single button interface and small enough to fit like a ring, this camera is for those whimsical sorts who upload every moment of their lives on social sites. Almost like a fingers point of view!

9) Flying Stick Camera by Tsunho Wang

tencam9

Using kinetic energy to power it, the Flying Stick is like those fascinating straw helicopters we used to get at the beach. Rub it between your palms and whoosh it away! Im sure it will capture your bald plate perfectly!

8 ) Triops Digital Camera by Franziska Faoro

tencam8

Dont want a chopper camera, no worries play catch with it. Three protected fisheye lenses capture the moments of joy in a panoramic way, every time you throw these beauties.

7) Samsung SS700 by Jin Woo Han

tencam7

Wow, imagine a camera that doubles up as a display. Imagine the amount of money you will save on those digital photo frames! Wow!

6) Touch Sight by Chueh Lee, Liqing Zou, Ning Xu, Saiyou Ma, Dan Hu, Fengshun Jiang & Zhenhui Sun

tencam6

A digital camera for the visually impaired sounds like an oxymoron to me! Jokes aside, the Touch Sight has a lightweight, flexible Braille display sheet which displays a 3D image by embossing the surface. Neat, very neat!

5) Fun Camera by Jian Guan

tencam5

Adding the fun element to the art of photography, this camera will give us a fisheye distortion view of the pics that we take. You can even click funny pic of yourself thanks to its magnifying glass iteration.

4) Skyros by Siddharth Kambe & Dipti Hanako Kambe

tencam4

From the heavens aboveor more closer, say 120 feet and then all the way back to its base; Skyros captures images at regular intervals and brings them back for you. Almost like hooking a cam to a boomerang, only this one flies up further and is safer.

3) eXtreme Compact Digicam by Camillo Vanacore

tencam3

An all-weather, all-terrain coolpix camera, answer to my prayers?

2) Panoramic Digital Camera by Hye-Jeong Yang

tencam2

Ok, so we recounted cameras that fly, soar and even one which we can throw. So lets do a different motion, how about one that spins and captures all that it sees on the trip?

1) USB Digital Camera by Sungwoo Park

Kahuna Adventure Tent Kayak By Mario Weiss

Kahuna Adventure Tent Kayak By Mario Weiss

Next trip to the lake, dont carry a tent to pitch, instead hire out an ingenious Kahuna. This is an open top outrigger kayak that converts into a tent with ease. It features a Mirage Drive pedal/crank mechanism designed by Hobie Kayaks, plus an ordinary paddle to assist in maneuvering the boat. Detachable, folding seats make way for spacious comfy interiors, when pitched as a tent. The all-in-one takes away the bother of carrying extra loads.

The outrigger hosts all your camping gear; a screen cloth mounts between the bars of the outrigger to serve as a base for the tent, similar to a camp bed.

To support the leg movement of the Mirage Drive a special detachable seat with a high back and a strong Lombard section has been especially develop.

Overall I would say its a neat concept, but since Im not a camping-freak I wouldnt know how effective this pitch would be.

SpeedBat Electric Wheel On A Stick By Shey Shafranek

SpeedBat Electric Wheel On A Stick By Shey Shafranek

It is an electrically powered wheel on a stick. That’s what it is. It’s called the “speedBat.” But it is so much more. You ever been inline-skating and just got totally tired of pumping but really basically just wanted to continue to go fast forward? See what’s going on here yet? Yeah? Yeah. Auto-skate time is now.

What the speedBat consists of is a small electric motor, a stick, and a really nice adjustable multi-function handle. That’s it! For those of you who’ve had their dog pull them speedily down the street, so fast that you fall right on your face and continue to get dragged until your whole face is ripped off!!!! -well, this is for you.

Also since I’m sure someone’ll mention it: the stick gets traction from the weight of the motor. It’s no light venture here mang. Take a peek at the video and wish for a flat top.

Breakable – Two Plates Result From One By Alexander Hulme

Breakable - Two Plates Result From One By Alexander Hulme

What happens to your plate when you drop it on the ground? It breaks! -what about plastic? -QUIET YOU! — Alexander Hulme has got the solution to this dilemma! A design concept which he dubs so un-recklessly “Breakable.” It’s one plate with two more built in. Drop the single plate and two more come out! Watch for chips.

Though the concept isn’t flawless (note the little sharp edges here and there), you’ve got to admit the silly genius behind the idea. How many evil henchmen cartoon characters do you know that act the same way? That’s my question to you.

I love this plate’s indestructibility. Wish there were more plates inside the smaller ones too. Plates eternal!

SENSE Food Enhancer Tableware System By Katrien Ploegmakers

SENSE Food Enhancer Tableware System By Katrien Ploegmakers

I have heard of this restaurant where they serve food in total darkness. The reason behind it is that, when we block our visual perception our other senses get heightened, thereby making the meal experience more enjoyable. On a similar pattern is the SENSE tableware, which consists of Scent Flowers, Hot Stone Plates, Palate Cleansers and a Hot Ice Tea Ceremony.

The Scent Flowers explode your smell-senses with an aromatic experience and can be assigned to accompany specific dishes.

Hot Stone Plates are porcelain plates with inlaid warm basalt stones heated in stock or oil. This makes the meal more nutritious.

Palate Cleansers here, are essentially mint vapors which cleanse your palate between courses.

The Hot Ice Tea Ceremony consists of a table and tea set that are a part of a modern tea serving ceremony. “Placing the tea carafe on the table will set of the crystallization of the Hot Ice that will run through the tabletop into the double walled tea glasses. Do not trust your eyes the ice is hot! ”

Minmax Foldable Sneakers By Marc Illan

Minmax Foldable Sneakers By Marc Illan

About 15 years ago, a fashion designer exhibited a line of clothes that folded into books. It was a new paradigm for dressing. I can’t for the life of me remember his name but the Minimax concept by Marc Illan triggered a flashback when I was inspired to study the math and art behind origami. The “foldable shoe” idea, tho not original, is explored really well here. A simple urban slip-on that looks great. There are advantages for both consumers and retailers from being able to fold it flat for storage. It’s a reduction in material waste and packaging. Brills!

Hydro Tec-Hydration Protection Snow Sports Wear By Francis Fox

Hydro Tec-Hydration Protection Snow Sports Wear By Francis Fox

One of the biggest bnummers of any sport is the fear of injury from falls and winter sports are no different. Here is a jacket that proposes to act as a protective gear against those accidental slips on the ice, which can be really painful. The design includes an impact chamber filled with water and air that acts as a cushioning. On impact, the air is pushed up the back channel and into the dissipation chamber situated around the jackets neck, inflating it. Wear it and show off your stunts, without fear!

Since the neck area gets inflated, it offers a certain degree of whiplash protection and support. Its a good idea to fill in drinkable water into the chamber; coz once youre knocked down you may want to replenish yourself with some.

Shaken and stirred!

Video killed the radio star, but I think digital players did more damage. Looks like a cut out of a stairwell! And what are stairs good for? Putting things on. The “+Chair”, designed by So Young Park, is basically a place for putting some candles on. But don’t start your hair on fire. Maybe some books are a better idea! Also the chair comes apart at all the edges, so it can be transported quite easily.

The tiny extra step near the head of the chair adds a whole’nother dimension that can hold any number of things: books, a big pillow, a bunch of marbles. While you’re here, take a look at the rest of the chairs we’ve got here at Yanko Design.

StepGlider Human Powered Vehicle By Thomas Van Halewyck

StepGlider Human Powered Vehicle By Thomas Van Halewyck

Its not a half-baked attempt to tout a new Segway and neither is it replacing the rollerblades; StepGlider is in a league of its own. Using the natural swagger of us humans as its inspiration, this new kind of travel mode guarantees stability as it causes a linear locomotion which gives us a sense of safety. As Thomas describes it, The momentum is caused by the correlation between walking and a force among the hands and a gearbox, through which an accelerated movement is obtained.

You cant expect the older generation adopting StepGlider, but the weary middle-age folks may find it a fascinating ride. It is a comforting thought to know that it has a braking system in place and all you need to practice is your natural walk, for it to glide. Check out the video that makes this mode of transportation an easy breeze.

Peepo GPS Device For Guide Dogs By Jason Perkins

Guide Dogs for the blind folks generally come trained for taking them around the neighborhood and maybe an extra distance. This surely curtails mobility and independence in case they want to explore more than their usual territory. The Peepo GPS Device gives these people a certain degree of freedom to travel beyond the normal route. The two-part device comprises of a handheld GPS unit, which uses vocal commands to register the destination and map it. The second attaches to the guide dogs handle and gives subtle directions via vibration zones; L= Left, R= Right, F= Forward and up on arriving the destination, the zones simultaneously vibrate.

Eraser Light By Steffen Kehrle And Julia Landsiedl For Moree

The big push takes the place of the little switch with this new light device by Steffen Kehrle and Julia Landsiedl for Moree. Apparently it’s difficult to dim these new energy-saving lightbulbs. They be bright. Ths solution these two designers have here is to literally block the light, the object replicating the look of a push-out eraser with a paper cover. Don’t worry though, this is made of aluminum.

The Eraser is 38×13×21 centimeters at its smallest state. Anodized aluminum, PMMA. Colors: Champagne, Aluminum, with that nice little Moree tag at the base. Cord out the back with an unmistakable no-switch activation. Plug it in and watch it go.
